Sources of Sound and Associated Legal Issues
A copyright is a set of rights that are immediately granted to someone who produces an original work of authorship, such as a book, music, film, or piece of software. These rights include the ability to duplicate the work, create derivative works, distribute copies, and publicly perform and show it.
How
to Avoid Copyright Issue?
· Credited
to the Owner
1) All
author and copyright information should be looked up. The websites of Broadcast
Music Incorporated (BMI), the American Society of Composers, Authors, and
Publishers (ASCAP), and the Society of European Stage Authors & Composers
(SESAC) can all provide people with this information. These
companies feature active websites that enable people to browse for songs in
their archives and see the proper title, the author, and the date the song was
created or released. The Library of Congress also offers an online search
option.
2) Enter
the song's title. Make sure using the official title rather than the line
that appears to be the title. Many songs have strange names, and the titles of
other songs are never stated in the lyrics.
3) After
the title, type the term 'Copyright' or a copyright symbol which is a
letter 'c' with a circle around it. This statement informs all readers
that the song is protected by law. The statement also informs listeners
that they respect copyright by displaying it publicly.
· Asking
Permission
Assess
whether or not authorization is required. Determine who the owner is. Determine
which rights are required. Make contact with the owner and see if payment is
necessary. Make a written agreement with the approval.
· Buy
When
people buy a sound effect from a website or a CD publisher, they aren't
actually purchasing the sound. Rather, they are purchasing a license. This
implies that they are purchasing the right to use the sound in certain
ways. It does not provide them control over the sound. The sound and the
copyright to it are still owned by the Web business.
· Free
Source
Free
sound is basically sound for those who does not want to pay to use the sound.
With free sound anyone can use them for free but there are usually rules when
using a free sound. For example, some sound needed to by credited when using
it.
